I want you all to know that I love each and every one of you who takes the time to read this blog and watch the videos I make, especially during the Blitz. It is very often the busiest time of the year for me, and 2024 is no exception.
To put things in perspective, here’s what I’ve been doing for the last month. I had a primary gig that lasted for five weeks. It was supposed to last seven weeks (today would have been the last day), but I was instead poached to another show (by the same network, so there’s no drama), that will now take me until the end of July, with a higher title and rate. I’m grateful for this, as last year nearly bankrupted me due to mom’s final expenses and a lack of work in the back half of the year. To help make up that lost ground and clear debts, I’m also doing a side hustle for as long as I can keep both up. If I don’t collapse, the secondary bit will end sometime in April or May most likely.
That’s just the paid work. Then there’s the Blitz, which has required me to write a blog every night in order to keep pace with the Oscars schedule. I also do videos once a week, including for tonight. For the first few weeks, I was able to keep a decent pace, writing my scripts over the weekend, recording on Monday, and editing and uploading to YouTube on Wednesday nights in case of copyright claim. Most of the time when I get flagged, the video can still run as planned, I just wouldn’t be able to monetize it (I don’t qualify for monetization yet anyway). However, sometimes the claimant is so strict that they will embargo the video entirely. In those rare cases, when I appeal, there’s still a 48-hour hold before anyone can watch. So by posting on Wednesday night, I can ensure the video is published – even in a restricted form – for the Friday blog entry. As it happens, I haven’t gotten a copyright claim yet, as I think I’ve figured out the exact amount of footage I can take from an individual source to avoid the content ID trigger.
On top of that, there’s all the regular coverage for the blog and the channel, including new reviews, TFINYW, “The Worst Trailer in the World,” and the backlog of films from last year I still have to clear due to the Independent Spirit Awards. I put up the new video last weekend, and boy did I poke the bear. Apparently there’s a group of fans so willing to die on the hill of Godzilla x Kong that I spent the better part of Tuesday and Wednesday just filtering, deleting, reporting, and blocking a deluge of some of the most hateful, vitriolic, and borderline violent remarks from people so offended that I would make fun of a trailer. I eventually had to turn off comments just for my own mental health. This video has the second-most views of anything I’ve ever done (my video mocking the Minions: The Rise of Gru trailer still dominates nearly two years later), and the second-most likes I’ve ever gotten for a single post. It also has more dislikes than every video I’ve ever done put together, and even with the comments I’ve left up, it’s still more than everything else combined. I’m all for reasoned and respectful disagreement, but these are just JOKES, people! Telling me to kill myself is beyond extreme.
So yeah, by Wednesday night, I had no mental bandwidth left. I was about 2/3 of the way done with this week’s video, and I just shut down. Between the video response, two jobs, and the Blitz, I had no energy left. So I decided to take the risk and finish the video tonight, hoping against hope that my theory on the footage held true, and I wouldn’t get a claim that blocked me from posting. Thankfully, all is well.
I say all of this not to complain, but merely to express that this is a labor of love, but it is a labor nonetheless, and knowing that you all enjoy what I do is the biggest morale boost I get sometimes. So as you (hopefully) delve into tonight’s breakdown, just know that I truly do appreciate any and all of you who take any time out to read or listen to me rambling on about movies.
Seriously, though, I need a nap.
This year’s nominees for Best Actress are… in the video below!
***
No matter who gets nominated each year, no matter which films get honored and which ones don’t, and no matter my opinions one way or the other, it is worth remembering that a lot of good people put in a ton of hard work just so fans and dicks like me (in both cases) can rave or shit on them. And as fatigue massively sets in (I was supposed to spend the next four days working the local primary election, but I pulled out because I just don’t have the time anymore), it’s always good to keep that in mind. Even the worst flicks imaginable have dedicated people doing their best to pay the bills, and that’s never lost on me.
My Rankings:
Are in the video.

Up next, the Blitz is off for the next several days, but obviously there’s still more regular coverage to be had, including reviews for the remaining Independent Spirit nominees as well as new movies like Dune: Part Two. Assuming I can keep things together, Wednesday will bring the final category of this process, the one we all wait for, even though this year it’s pretty much in the bag. It’s Best Picture!
