I’m not the best at promotion or social media. I concede that I just got too old to keep up. Also, being an introvert, what little I do get across takes a bit of psyching myself up. You have no idea how many times I went back and forth on starting a YouTube channel before I finally pulled the trigger three years ago.
Still, being part of a community of film lovers has its perks, and I’d like to share some of the fruits of our collective labor with you tonight. I’m truly thankful for the opportunities that I’ve gotten from my friends at Behind the Rabbit Productions and No Rest for the Weekend. What started as generic indie festival coverage during the pandemic through a mutual friend has turned into something highly creative and ambitious, and it’s a lot of fun to boot. They’re the reason I got to cover AFI Fest this year, as well as the Mill Valley Film Festival, and it’s an absolute hoot to just have roundtable discussions about mainstream and independent cinema.
One of the cooler projects we’ve done the last couple of years is to hold our own awards show to celebrate the best films of the year. We have nowhere near the clout of the Academy, and we likely never will, but it’s oddly refreshing to know you’re part of a process that honors the people who create the art that you’re passionate about.
So in an effort to show them some love, I present to you the 2nd Annual No Rest for the Weekend Awards, a show I had the honor of coordinating, scripting, and partially presenting. I hope you enjoy it.
Hopefully next year we’ll be able to do even more. This is an immensely enjoyable project, and weirdly an exciting distraction from my normal, self-imposed Oscar Blitz duties.
