We’re at the end of our first full week of Blitz coverage, and I have earned myself a nap and a night off. As such, the plan goes that every week I will include a video breakdown of one of the categories. You can see the draw of those special fields in the Hub post for this year’s gauntlet (I wonder if the fact that I’m linking to that post, and then will link to this one inside that post will cause some kind of infinite quantum loop).
The Adapted Screenplay category offers the best chance for two of this year’s Best Picture nominees to get a win as a sort of consolation prize since they likely won’t be taking home top honors. Those films are American Fiction and Barbie. The latter will almost certainly get a couple of awards in the artistic categories like Original Song and Production Design, but for the former, this will likely be its only victory if it gets the vote, as the competition in its other contests is just too strong. This is also why advocates for Barbie were so adamant that it be nominated for Original Screenplay instead. This year, that group is a lot weaker than this one, and with Margot Robbie left out of Best Actress, there’s no realistic chance at a so-called “major” category for the film to beat the other contenders.
But what actually deserves to win? Well, you’ll just have to watch the video to find out.
This year’s nominees for Adapted Screenplay are… below.
***
I do actually like the fact that Adapted Screenplay is the stronger category this year. Most of the time it’s not, which has created a false presumption that it’s somehow less of an honor to take home this particular bit of Oscar gold. Hopefully this class of nominees helps to buck that trend and disabuse people of that idea.
My Rankings:
They’re in the video. Watch it to see. If you think I’m just shilling for my view count, well, yeah. That’s the point. I don’t make videos to have no one see them, just like I don’t write this blog to have no one read it. Duh.
Who do you think should win? Vote now in the poll below!
Up next, as mentioned yesterday, starting in two years the Academy Awards will be back up to 24 categories. On Monday, we’ll take a look (and a listen) at the reason the ceremony currently sits at 23. It’s Sound!
